On the November 14 episode of The Amazing Race 17, Mallory Ervin thought she had wandered onto the wrong reality show as fellow contestant Chad Waltrip proposed to his girlfriend/partner, Stephanie Smith. ?It was like we were on The Bachelor!? Mallory laughs to In Touch about the surprising engagement, which shocked the racers during a brief lull in a grueling challenge in Muscat, Oman. ?We like Chad and Stephanie a lot,? Mallory adds. ?It was so nice to step back to reality and see there really is life beyond the Race!? Unfortunately for Mallory and her father/partner, Gary, the competition ended on week eight after losing their way to the elusive Jabel Shams. Though they were hours behind the other teams, the pair kept their spirits up. ?We really tried to stay positive,? Mallory says. ?We had nothing to lose.? The two may have lost out on the million-dollar prize, but they gained priceless relationships with their fellow contestants. ?It was a competition and we wanted to win," Gary concludes, ?but we made some lifelong friendships!?
